Atherton Police Department's Newest

The Town welcomes our newest Police Officer, Matthew Barrera, to the Atherton Police Department effective April 13, 2015. At the age of 18, Matt joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served for eight years with distinction. During those eight years, he was honored with leadership awards including being selected as the Distinguished Honor Graduate of U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant’s School, and the U.S. Army Ranger Course. In 2004 he was given the honor of leading men into battle in Operation Phantom Fury, the Battle of Fallujah. For his actions during dangerous house-to-house combat operations, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with a Combat “V” signifying valor and acts of heroism during combat operations.

In 2012, he became a member of the San Jose Police Department where some of his experience included the Crisis Intervention Team, Terrorism Liaison Officer, and conducting personal security details for the Department’s Intelligence Unit.
Officer Barrera is grateful to have been afforded the opportunity to serve the Atherton community, and looks forward to being part of the Atherton Police Department family.

Officer Barrera will be sworn in at the April 15 City Council meeting at 7:00 p.m.
