Caltrain Testing

On the evenings of March 27, 28, and 29, between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., Caltrain will be conducting safety tests, as part of the Advanced Signal System Project, at several roadway crossings. Fair Oaks and Watkins Ave. in Atherton are included in the schedule.

To test these crossings, a train will run approximately 4 miles on either side of the crossings, traveling through Millbrae, Burlingame, San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos, Redwood City, Unincorporated San Mateo County, Atherton, Menlo Park, and Palo Alto. Tests are conducted at night to avoid disruption of regular train service and properly record the results. The majority of the activity will occur during a 2-3 hour window at night. Neighbors may experience standard gate crossing noise and horns during this time and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Get Ready Atherton!

Last night's community disaster preparedness event was a success. Thank you to those who showed up. Our goal was to inform and educate the community on how important disaster preparedness is and to get more volunteers to help with the grass roots organization of their respective neighborhoods.  In addition to a well attended event, we collected over 50 names and numbers of residents who signed up to help their neighborhoods and at least a few of whom are in Atherton districts that don’t currently have any leadership.

The Town is working on uploading video clips of the event and the presentations from last night's event. A link to those will be included in next week's Atherton Online.

Did you miss last nights event? The County is holding their annual county-wide disaster preparedness event in June.

This year's Disaster Preparedness Day will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the San Mateo County Fair, located at the San Mateo County Event Center, 1346 Saratoga Avenue, in San Mateo.  The event is a wonderful opportunity for families to watch public safety demonstrations and gather information from dozens of exhibitors on how to create a disaster preparedness kit and family communication plan during an emergency. Cities and public safety agencies are also on hand to showcase their disaster preparedness plans, initiatives and equipment.
Residents that arrive between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. receive free parking and free admission to the County Fair.  Last year, over 3,100 individuals passed through the event in the first hour, with attendance running well over 5,000 for the day.  Attendees are offered free CPR classes, numerous presentations related to disaster preparedness, disaster preparedness education and a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Exercise.

Millennial generation and the vagaries of business publishing? Plenty! Hear these nationally recognized authorities at the first in a series of Author Roundtables at Menlo College. Collectively, these authors have published 20 books. The discussion will be moderated by Richard Moran, President of Menlo College (author of Navigating Tweets, Feats, and Deletes: Lessons for the New Workplace).

Distracted Driver Awareness Month

April is Distracted Driving Awareness month statewide in California. In addition to the month-long campaign, the first week of April is California Teen Safe Driving Week.

Throughout the month, patrol and traffic officers will be focusing enforcement on distracted driving violations, including using a cellphone not in "hands-free" mode while driving and for texting while driving. It's not worth it! Silence the distractions and wait until safely parked to check your phone.

The Atherton Police Department reminds you to always drive safely and avoid distractions such as the cellphone when driving.

Thank You!

Thank you for being a part of Atherton Online!

Have a great weekend!
