Atherton Fiber

For the past couple of years, the City Council has been working to create a Town-wide fiber network. In the absence of other companies stepping up, a private company was formed,Atherton Fiber, run by local Atherton resident, Mike Farmwald and Robert Hayes, CEO of Palo Alto.

The Council directed, and staff is working to create an agreement to enable Atherton Fiber to access the Town’s rights-of-way to provide fiber to every residence in Town. We expect that agreement to be finalized in the coming months. The Town’s website provides some general information on Atherton Fiber ( However, Atherton Fiber is also now up and running with their own website with details on their vision and services to be provided - - to Atherton residents.

Visit the website and watch for more details as this project evolves.

San Carlos Airport Noise Update

This past Wednesday, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors reviewed the San Carlos Airport Disturbance Study presented by Jim Porter, County Public Works Director and considered next steps.
Thus far, three consultants have been retained: 1) an airport noise consultant, 2) a general aviation airport consultant, and 3) a public opinion research firm. The consultants will gather data regarding the noise levels at San Carlos Airport, the best practices from other small general aviation airports around the country, and gauge community opinion regarding airport noise at San Carlos Airport during the month of May.

The data gathered will be analyzed, combined and used to inform the recommendations that will be presented to the Board for their consideration in June.

Earth Action Fair - May 22

Come visit the Tesla booth and take a test drive!

Atherton is hosting a town-wide celebration of Earth Day with a series of events and activities. The series will kick-off (tentatively) on Thursday, May 19th, with a Film Screening of Robert Stone's environmental classic, Pandora's Promise, followed by a Q&A with one of the movie's stars.

The Atherton 2020 Earth Action Fair, with showcase of Student Challenge Presentations, will be held on Sunday May 22nd, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, featuring exhibitors representing local businesses, non-profit organizations, agencies and artists, along with a number of town committees presenting their work.  There will be music, food, entertainment for children and some special activities for residents.

The Student Environmental Challenge aims to engage area students in a competition that inspires them to learn about an environmental topic and prepare a visual presentation that will inform the community about that topic.  The student presentations will be showcased at the fair and the community will have an opportunity to view them, talk about them with the students directly, and vote on their favorite presentations to win prizes.
