Atherton Town Center - Project Activity

Overall project work this week focused on finishing up the new water line installation, beginning work on the underground electrical, layout and excavation of the grade beams at City Hall, forming rebar and placing pile caps, installation of rebar and cables, and finishing up underground plumbing.
Site utility work is challenging as we have encountered numerous issues with existing (active and abandoned) underground utilities across the site. All known utilities were identified and marked; but, there continues to be a lot of unknowns that have been encountered on the site due to its uses over the years...and even, some fairly significant active utility lines that are simply not where they are supposed to be...like this 36" SFPUC Water Line.
Live webcams for Library and City Hall/PD Building are active on the Town's website. There is also a project progress photo gallery.
City Hall and Police Building
For the new City Hall and Police Building this week, Amoroso finished up the layout and excavation of the grade beams as well as the layout and excavation of the elevator pit. Crews also began forming rebar and placing notches and pile caps. This excavated area leads toward the elevator pit from "under" the new Police offices.
The elevator pit is on the left side of the Lobby as you enter off of Fair Oaks.
Looking at it from the front doors of the lobby area, the elevator is to the left and straight ahead you would exit the site to the Civic Courtyard. The left side of the building is the Police Building areas.
Historic Town Hall
Demolition of the interior of the historic Town Hall building is complete. This building will ultimately become a part of the new Library connected via a deck and french doors that spill out from the side of the building onto the new deck.
Work on this building will be sealed up for the winter season as work continues elsewhere on the project site. Once the interior work begins, work will resume on the historic Town Hall building.
The image here shows where the new library ends on the left with the rebar (the library entry areas). The deck area will extend to the right and back to the historic Town Hall which will become a multi-purpose room for the Library and Heritage Room. The two windows will be converted to french doors that will open onto the new deck. The room to the right of the two windows is designated as the new mini-cafe space. The space will be plumbed for a future mini-cafe, but an operator has not yet been identified.
Library Building
Work this week focused on the installation of rebar for the pending concrete pour. A second pour will occur next week after the rebar curbs and stem walls are completed.

Amoroso will also begin work on a mock up of the rammed earth wall that will traverse the east wall of the new Library. You can see the curved rebar traversing back into the site on the left of the concrete truck. This is the exterior rammed earth wall of the Library. Take a look at the Project Webcams and you'll get a good feel for what the shape of the final building will be and how it relates to the project site.
Site Work
Site work this week still focused on utilities. While the main sewer line is complete, laterals needed to be added. Storm drain work is also continuing. CalWater is onsite to complete the new water line for the project as well as West Bay Sanitary for their connections. Once all this underground work completes, Amoroso can seal up the holes and the buildings will begin to go vertical.
We expect the foundations to be complete and concrete slabs to be poured by the end of this year. After that, steel will begin its installation as the buildings go vertical.
