Landscape Water Efficiency Requirements

On July 15, 2015, the State of California approved revisions to the Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (MWELO), which promotes efficient water use in new and retrofitted landscapes.

As of December 1, 2015, the Ordinance applies to new landscape projects equal to greater than 500 sq. ft. (the previous threhold was 2,500 sq. ft.). The Ordinance also applies to rehabilitated landscape projects equal to or greater than 2,500 sq. ft. A prescriptive checklist is available as a compliance option for projects under 2,500 sq. ft.

On December 18, 2019, the Town of Atherton City Council adopted Ordinance No. 640 repealing and replacing Title 15, Chapter 15.48 "Water-Efficient Landscaping" of the Atherton Municipal with the California Code of Regulations Title 23, Division 2, Chapter 2.7 "Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance," adopted by reference with revisions.
