Get Ready Atherton!

You may have heard about an exciting event in Atherton happening next week.

At 5:30 p.m. the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will kick off Atherton's disaster preparedness event by landing a helicopter in the grassy area on the left field of the baseball park.

At 6:00 p.m. the event doors will open at the Pavilion. Our event will consist of some short informational presentations from public safety officials (Police, Fire, USGS) and then a “trade show” of sorts with tables set up and manned by an array of emergency prep entities, such as emergency equipment/supply vendors, disaster management experts (Red Cross/USGS), utility companies and community groups (ADAPT – Atherton’s civilian neighborhood organizer and trainer), etc., where residents can get additional preparedness information, buy supplies and talk directly to people who can help you get prepared for a potential disaster.

Great Handouts and Cool Prizes!

For those in attendance the Town will be handing out free Get Ready Atherton! tote bags that include several emergency supplies (pictured above). Included in the tote bag will be two raffle tickets. A raffle will take place every 15 minutes beginning at 6:15 p.m. The raffle items include emergency survival kits, waterproof light stick & device charger, stove in a can, water purification bottles, solar powered inflatable light, forever battery dyno charger and a grand prize being raffled off at the very end of the event (7:55 p.m.).
Attendees must be present to win.

You need to know that the first to respond for help in the event of a major disaster, particularly in Atherton, will likely be a family member or a neighbor - not the police or fire department. Being prepared and being informed is your best insurance policy to protecting yourself and your family.

Attending this event will help educate and prepare you and your families for a major disaster. The earthquake that hit Napa last summer is but one of many good reasons to be prepared.

Vendors, Experts & Public Officials

Various tables will be set up in the pavilion and on the patio where experts from CHP, Menlo Park Fire District, Atherton PD, USGS, Red Cross, CalWater, PG&E, and Peterson Power Company will be on hand to answer questions on how to get prepared for an emergency.

The event will consist of vendors who will be on hand to show and sell their products. Those vendors include:

Big 5
Redwood Trading Company
Ace Hardware
Earthshakes - emergency supplies/survival kits
Wise Foods - emergency food

Inside of the Pavilion there will be various table set up and "manned" by our very own Atherton Disaster and Preparedness Team (ADAPT). Here you will be able to find out more about your neighborhood disaster preparedness district.

Neighborhood Coordinators

The Menlo Park Fire Protection District (MPFPD) is responsible for providing emergency support in the event of a major emergency or disaster.  MPFPD has divided up the communities its serves (i.e., Atherton, Menlo Park and East Palo Alto) into discrete neighborhood districts.

Atherton districts are numbered 1-16.  Each District or neighborhood has a Neighborhood Coordinator who helps organize and educate his/her neighborhood on emergency preparations and planning.  Click the Neighborhood Map link to see how Atherton is divided into specific Districts or Neighborhoods. Several of our Districts are still in need of coordinators. We hope you will volunteer!w
