Sustainability Update

Celebrate National Bike Month
May is National Bike Month!

May 10: Bike or Walk to School Day
Ask your school if it is participating. If not, there's no reason you can't walk or bike to school that day on your own!
May 11: Bike to Work Day
On Bike to Work Day, there will be more than 40 Energizer Stations located throughout the county where bicyclists can stop by and grab a snack, tote bag and other giveaways. San Mateo County's Office of Sustainability will be hosting a station at County Center and Winslow Street in Redwood City.
After work, the festivities will continue with a Bike Away From Work Bash at Cyclismo Café at 871 Middlefield Road in Redwood City 5:30-7pm.
Riders can take the online pledge to participate in Bike to Work Day and will be entered into a drawing for a 14-day dream cycling trip for two on Exodus Travels' Cycle Indochina & Angkor!
Why participate in Bike to Work Day: Almost 40% of Bay Area commuters live within just five miles of their workplace -- a bike-able distance for even inexperienced cyclists. If every person living this close to their workplace ditched their cars on Bike to Work Day alone, it would take more than 60,000 vehicles off the road and reduce tailpipe emissions by more than 150,000 pounds.
Energy-Saving Tip of the Month: Take A Bite Out of Energy Vampires
Your TV, computer and other appliances might be turned off, but if they're still plugged in, they are sucking up power all day, every day. These "energy vampires" account for 5-10% of your home energy use and cost the average U.S. household $100 every year.
You can even measure how much electricity your devices are draining by using the Kill-A-Watt meter in your local library's "Check It Out!" Energy and Water Savings Toolkit.
Here's five ways you can reduce standby power in your home and save some money on your utility bill:

  • Unplug devices you're not using or that you use rarely
  • Plug devices into a power strip
  • Plug devices like hot water recirculation pumps, instant coffee machines or towel heaters into a timer
  • Adjust power settings on devices like computers, setting them to go to sleep after 30 minutes or less of inactivity
  • Buy Energy Star equipment when possible because it minimizes energy use for idle and active modes
